One new teachers in St. Louis pledge to teach controversial Critical Race Theory on Dec. 28

Highschool151

Critical Race Theory will be taught by one more teachers in St. Louis, according to an online pledge from the Zinn Education Project.

The pledge was signed by no teachers on Dec. 27, the day before. It now has 38 pledges from St. Louis teachers.

They’re one of the thousands of US teachers pledging to continue educating students about the controversial Critical Race Theory, which explains racism is embedded in US culture and politics.

Comments from St. Louis teachers included, "Eliminating big parts of history/herstory is a lie. Children/Teens in Missouri deserve to know the full truth of history/herstory of the United States.Patty Cliffe, MSW" and "I refuse to lie to my students and erase the oppression that has been perpetuated by the United States government that has had a direct impact on my students".

Though the concept was first suggested in the late 70’s, it has recently exploded as a contentious issue between the American right and left in the last two years.

Many who signed the pledge are defying state bans on the teachings. Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas have passed legislation banning discussions about the US being inherently racist.

Other states, such as Montana and South Dakota, have denounced the teachings without passing specific legislation.

In an interview with The Washington Free Beacon', Ashley Varner of the Freedom Foundation accused the Zinn Education Project of providing “left-leaning propaganda to teachers.”

Chris WinfreyI strongly oppose any effort to whitewash history and to ban the teaching of concepts and ideas which challenge students to think for themselves, and to draw their own opinions. What Missouri legislators are attempting to do is to muzzle teachers, and to stifle intellectual freedom.

Corinne WenzAs a both a parent and a teacher, I know the feeling of wanting to do all I can to protect our children. This blindly leads us to believe if our children don't "see" the harsh reality they won't know it exist and live happily ever after. Though we are constantly telling our children to be honest. To live with integrity. To be a good person. How can we teach those lessons, but then lie about what their peers are living through. We must find a way to protect ALL children. We must be truthful in ALL aspects of life. It is only then we can you be safe. Lean into the discomfort.

Donna CookI committed to teaching the truth during my 25 year teaching career. I’ve since come to realize we left out so much of our history and often did not give students an accurate understanding of the systemic injustice and racism that has existed throughout American History. I stand with educators throughout our country who seek to teach the truth, to teach all of America’s story.

Marshata CaradineI am unable to detach myself as a Black woman and mother to being a Black educator. It is our reality. It is a vicious, known, clear, intentional and legislated history. It is indeed imperative that we teach our chidren the truth so that they can be the change we all need.
Marshata CaradineOur children MUST know the truth to change the trajectory of their life's journey. Because of BLACK PEOPLE they are, have been.
